The next step, after making a list of my fears, is to write down why I’m afraid. For example:
Fear – Spiders
Why? – Because they can bite me
Why am I afraid that they can bite me? – Because I can get an infection and die.
Aha! Death. That’s the real fear driving the fear of spiders.
Now, after making a long list of things like this (which will probably be more complex than spiders), you might be feeling a bit depressed! Don’t worry because the best part is yet to come. Now, go over everything on your list and ask yourself if it’s something YOU can control, or if it’s something you can turn over to God and let go of. I think you will find that most of your fears are things that can be given over to your higher power. In realizing that I don’t have any control over my fears, I am released from them. The reality is that we will never be fully free from fear. However, I don’t have to walk around with them everyday weighing me down. When I let go of my fears and give them to God, I free up space for the good stuff like light and love and compassion and positivity!
